How does Jettson do it?
In just 3 years, Jett Lawrence has won 6 Championship titles (in a row).
Supercross is the stadium tour from January to mid-May with 17 rounds throughout the country. These are shorter races on smaller tracks with lots of dirt jumps and difficult bump sections to test the riders. It’s extremely dangerous and absolutely perilous to race for 20 minutes plus 2 laps with 30 other guys trying to make a name for themselves. Simply surviving all 17 rounds without missing a race due to illness or injury or winning a single race is a tremendous accomplishment! Winning the series title is a feat of a champion!
The Pro Motocross Championship is the 11 round outdoor series during the summer. The tracks are long and the series is grueling! In the outdoors, the racers go as fast as the bike can go, launching off jumps and flying through the air - inspired by the desire to win and the thrill of the spectators.
When Jett Lawrence started winning races in outdoor motocross, we recognized that he was doing something different. He sat on the motorcycle differently than others, we could see that he was more stable on the bike as though it were an extension of him. As the riders race around the track, you can immediately see that he rides with a poise and with a sense of ease while the other riders are getting bounced around as though they are barely holding on to the bike. Somehow he does all of this and actually goes faster while using less energy. This helps him win races and preserve his strength to endure the heat and physical demands of the sport of Motocross - one of the hardest and most physically demanding of all professional sports. But there is more to his success than that.
Jettson is undeniably a “once in a generation rider”

In his first season in the premier class of outdoor motocross, he won every single moto! 22 wins and 0 losses! Now, my other favorite racer Eli Tomac was out with a injury, but that does not diminish his accomplishment in any way!
So, how does he do it?
To accomplish what we are capable of, we must use all of our gifts and talents. I coach guys to recognize their gifts and talents and to pursue their interests and explore their passions. This is a natural and instinctive approach to cultivating fulfillment in our lives. To build our contentment and create the life that is possible for us we must not let our fear or self-doubt get in our own way. We challenge ourselves and grow as we seek a mixture of freedom, love, and self-expression.
Pulling a quote from my book The Authentically Grounded Man, “It is vital that our perspective on ourselves, on others, and what’s possible for us in the world be positive, ambitious, and demonstrably realistic.”
Next, It takes a village!
Ricky Carmichael, the 15 time Motocross/Supercross champion has described the key to his success in terms of the support he received. His team was 100% dedicated to his success and everything he needed was handed directly to him. In one interview, he described how his support system was absolutely critical to his success! They took great care of his motorcycle, they made sure he got enough rest, they fed him on time, they isolated him from negative thinking and criticism. All the focus was on supporting him - with such loving support there would be fewer distractions and he could share his gifts and not allow negative thoughts to fester. It’s a reminder that one man alone cannot do these amazing things on his own. It takes a village to raise a child, and we all continue to need our loving and supportive village in order grow into all that is possible for us. We need support to cultivate the success and fulfillment we desire.
They told him over and over again how good he was, which was obviously realistic. They reminded him of how successful he and the team could be, if they continued to work together and he continued taking such good care of himself! He said that’s what it takes to be a champion!
He remains a popular leader in the industry; now he’s a commentator for the races, and he does a great job! That takes hard work, and determination too! To start doing something that you’ve never done before – being a public speaker, challenging yourself to express your truths, in a way that others can understand and be inspired by.
Let’s all take a moment to recognize the wisdom in his words so we can step out of our human tendency to believe that we need to be able to do everything on our own.
Let’s be inspired by others and reach out for support when it comes time for us to start a second career or go after something new in our lives.
Albert Einstein wrote
“Strange is our situation here upon earth. Each of us comes for a brief visit, not knowing why, yet sometimes seeming to a divine purpose. From the standpoint of daily life, however, there is one thing we do know: That we are here for other men —above all for those upon whose smile and well-being our happiness depends, for the countless unknown souls with whose fate we are connected by a bond of sympathy. Many times a day, I realize how much my outer and inner life is built upon the labors of people, both living and dead, and how earnestly I must exert myself to give, in return, as much as I have received and am still receiving.”
We are all of divine design!
When I was 12 years old, my Mom cautioned me that I should be very careful to not put drugs or alcohol in my body. She explained her belief that we all have God inside of us and we would never want to allow those parts to be hurt. She said we need all of the beautiful parts of ourselves, and we could do damage to them if we put those substances in our body. Years later, I know what she meant.
The truth is that we all have gifts and talents, and things that we can do that others cannot do as easily. One key to our fulfillment and our happiness is to recognize our gifts and talents and to share them freely with the world. Helping to ease suffering or to create greater freedom and love for others in some way. Following this path and living as an expression of gratitude for our lives, we will be successful and appreciated - and we will find the support and inspiration we need along the way to accomplish our dreams.
I believe that Jett is talented and also bright: he pays attention so well that he learns the race course better than others. He’s naturally applying some of the discipline of the warrior and is not as distracted with negative thoughts or self doubt. He’s clear headed and aware of his abilities, and he simply doing what comes naturally. Again, he quickly learns the racecourse and is able to apply what he knows each time he goes around the track. I have been to some of the races and I watch every race on Peacock and you can see him explore the track and hit the same turns each time faster than everyone else.
What we are up against in our lives
We are alive and we are aware that we have gifts and talents to share - the question is are we are up to the challenge of expressing our gifts and truths?
Well, it’s difficult to do because our society is obsessed with scarcity, and the fear that there is not enough for everyone. We are indoctrinated to believe that in order to be successful we need to look a certain way or be rich or accumulate rare things to demonstrate that we are good enough.
We all want to be liked and loved and accepted so we hide our flaws and begin playing it safe in order to fit in. We carry self-doubt and a bit of fear from our childhood experiences that others might reject us if they see that we are not perfect.
We put aside our passions and interests and often hide our gifts and talents to become what we believe others want us to be. This leads us to feeling not good enough just as we are.
For example, we are taught to do whatever it takes to fit in with others so that we can earn a living. Sadly, abandoning our truths and following society in order to fit in crushes our individual spirit. What society wants us to be rarely aligns with our truths. Often our best talents and gifts go unappreciated or are squandered.
This causes dissatisfaction and then resentment when we are not supported. Love and support are vital components of our success. I believe that we are all trying to express ourselves - in my book “The Joy of Authentic Expression” I lay out a path for us to bring forth our gifts and talents in service to something bigger than ourselves. Solving this problem doesn’t come natural to us so we need to support each other and share ideas and perspectives.
Society offers many ways to escape or to numb the dissatisfaction that we have with our lives. Yes, these numb the bad feelings but they also numb the good stuff as well.
I share the perspective that we are all of divine design - the things that make life possible and allow our spirit to flourish are the same things that designed us - so we are actually exactly as we are supposed to be! Our challenge is to not be our biggest enemy! Our task is to connect to the love and spirit and truths within. Let’s explore our passions and interests and let’s bring forth more of our gifts and talents to share with the world in our own unique way. This is where we find the joy of our authentic expression. We are all of divine design and we all have gifts and talents to share. Seeing each other on the same level, as adequate and lovable human beings is vital to our ability to be our best. Like Mom said, there is God in each of us and we can call it whatever we want - I call it Love and I use a capital L as I believe it is synonymous with God because I believe it is the most important thing in the universe!
Remember that in the warrior traditions dissatisfaction is a gift. Our frustration and dissatisfaction is an indication that we are capable of more and we desire to be more and to experience more and to express more. If we numb that dissatisfaction, then we numb our gifts! If we numb ourselves for not fitting in, then we reduce the ability to express our truths and be ourselves fully. Let’s support those who are different and give them space to be who they are. Those who don’t fit in often come up with the solutions to help the world be a better place. Everyone has gifts! Everyone has something to share. You, me, our neighbors, everyone! Let’s encourage each other to continue refining our offering to help create greater love and freedom in our lives, and in our families, in our communities, and in the world.
Here are a few other tools from the ancient warrior traditions:
We need to work together to solve the problems of the world!
Practice gratitude for the things that are working and for the support and love we have always received.
Tune in to inspiration in all of it’s forms for it is an indicator of freedom and growth and a deeper expression of Love.
Seek challenge over comfort.
Take really great care of yourself and your thoughts - put your oxygen mask on first!
Our biggest challenge is to conquer our self-doubt. Our loving and supportive friends and fellow villagers can see us better that we can see ourselves - so we will need their help and inspiration in order love ourselves and be our best!
These concepts are vital to our success and fulfillment in life. Cultivating village and supporting each other to share our gifts in service to something bigger than ourselves is critical to creating greater Love and Freedom in all of our lives.
So? How does Jett do what he does?
My theory is that he is fully supported AND he is using his divine gifts and talents on that motorcycle. He’s 20 years old and he doesn’t drink alcohol or do drugs! He is at the peak of a multimillion dollar industry and has access to all the best trainers, nutrition, equipment, and support! He is loved and supported by his family and friends and his village. He is not doing it for himself! He is sharing his gifts and his talents with the world in the direction of his passions and interests. He knows he’s not perfect and that he doesn’t need to be - he know’s that he is an inspiring person simply by doing what he naturally does.
Let’s follow his example and be inspired to be our best!
So, we all need to believe that we can be successful in order for us to put in the work to refine our craft. We all need to believe that we are good enough and that we can thrive in the world of abundance or else we will not try.
See the chart of the Four Modalities of Expression in Chapter 6 of my book the Joy of Authentic Expression for more details on the effects of our perspectives and our belief systems..
So what’s next for Jett?
My hope is that he continues to take great care of himself and grow among his supportive village. I hope that he remains open-minded to the coaching, support, new tools and information that are available so he can continues to do his best and continue to inspire us to try new things and step out of our self-limiting beliefs.
My hope is that he will continue to be an ambassador of the sport, and of health and wellness, and supporting causes that are important to him. Giving back to the world in gratitude for all the Love he has received from the Earth and his divine design along with his opportunities to thrive and express himself!
Let’s all be inspired and express our truths. Don’t be afraid to be a little bit different. We all seek to be understood and to be known and to cultivate a sense of belonging. Don’t do damage to your gifts or your creativity or sacrifice your truths or your ideals in order to fit in. May your heroes inspire you to be your best and to do your best and to recognize your gifts and talents, and share them with the world in service to something bigger than yourself.
I help guys recognize sources of inspiration and step into being inspired as part of their full empowerment. At no point do we feel not good enough in the presence of someone who can do amazing things. Quite the contrary; we are motivated to bring our gifts forward through the inspiration of others. We become inspired by others to be our best and to express our truths.
Humility
Watching Jett on the podium after he won the race this past March at Daytona, I could see him processing the fact that the crowd was chanting for his main competitor, Eli Tomac who came in 2nd. He had a knowing smile on his face, and he understands that it’s a big show, and that we love Eli. He also understands that he can’t be everything to everyone but that if he continues to take really good care of himself, and continues to do his best, he has the opportunity to continue to thrive and inspire many people. He doesn’t need for everyone to see it right now, although the writing is on the wall! He’s just like us! He knows he has the goods, and he’s developing the intestinal fortitude to follow his path of authentic expression, and be all that he can be in this world.
Keep up the good work Jett! Keep up the good work Eli and Kenny, and all the racers! To all the rest of us - keep up the good work! We are inspiring to each other whether we are open to recognize it or not! None of us need to be perfect - it is not in our nature - our nature is to be open and grow and adapt. Those who are closed or who hide their imperfections will stop growing, learning and improving. Our nature is to grow in the direction of love and freedom - we grow through a mixture of challenge and praise - we grow towards the light and the life-giving forces of support. It takes a village and it takes gratitude for our village to be our best!
Inspiration beats perfection every time!
Remember also that when we are inspiring to others we don’t need to be perfect anymore. Perfection is a creation of the ego. Inspiration is a real connection with others and a powerful motivating force in our lives. Let’s continue to step into inspiration. Let’s continue to support each other and inspire each other to be our best.
